Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) is a machinery capital goods company. They sell their products into customers serving the construction mining, energy and transportation markets. Caterpillar makes construction and mining equipment, engines, gas turbines and locomotives. The company was founded in 1925 and headquartered in Peoria, IL.

Caterpillar has four main operating segments:
  • Construction Industries (42% of 2017 Revenues): Sells to construction, forestry, quarry and aggregates end markets. Key products sold include loaders, pavers, and excavators.
  • Energy & Transportation (35% of 2017 Revenues): Sells to oil and gas, power generation, marine and rail end markets. Key products sold are reciprocating engines, generators, gas turbines, locomotives and trucks.
  • Resource Industries (17% of 2017 Revenues): Sells to mining end markets. Equipment is used to extract and haul copper, iron ore, oil sands, aggregates and other commodities. Key products sold are shovels, miners, loaders and compactors.

Distribution

Caterpillar has an extensive private distribution network with over 3,500 dealer locations in 180 countries. The dealers sell new equipment, equipment rental and aftermarket parts and services.
