Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) is a leading provider of switching, routing, and security solutions for the telecom, government and financial services industries. The company was founded in 1996 and based in Sunnyvale, CA.

Juniper was founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu. It manufactures routers which are used by internet providers and corporations to route internet traffic. It also entered into security networking through its acquisition of NetScreen in 2003.

Business Overview

Juniper operates in two main segments.
  • Products Division (69% of 2017 Revenues): Sells high performance routing, switching and security networking products.
  • Services  Division (31% of 2017 Revenues): Sells maintenance, support and educational services for networking products.

Products Division Segment

Juniper manufactures three main types of products.

Routing Product line includes MX series, PTX series, ACX series, CPE product line and NorthStar Controller. 
  • MX series Enterprise routers that use JNPR's Trio silicon
  • PTX series JNPR's core router that uses ExpressPlus silicon
  • ACX series Service provider oriented routers for metro Ethernet and mobile backhaul
  • CPE line Cloud solution for full automation and network functions virtualization
  • NorthStar controller Global SDN controller that automates traffic paths across WAN
Switching Product line includes QFX datacenter switches and EX enterprise switches
  • QFX series Core, spine, leaf and TOR switches
  • EX series Enterprise branch, campus, and datacenter switching applications
Security Product line includes SRX firewall series, Sky Advanced Threat Protection and Spotlight Secure Threat Intelligence Platform. The SRX solution is also available as a virtualized firewall.

Services Division Segment

Juniper provides maintenance, support and educational services. Juniper delivers these services direct and through channel partners. Juniper trains their channel partners in the delivery of the services. Juniper had 1,912 people in its worldwide customer service at end of 2017.


Network equipment is a very competitive market with major players including Cisco, HPE, Arista and Huawei. 

Customers are also adopting white box equipment with open hardware rather than specialized routers.
